Living for Today

"What day is it?" asked Pooh.
"It's today," squeaked Piglet.
"My favorite day," said Pooh.

Today is Saturday, March 16, 2013.

The practice of living in the moment is one that we would all do well to hone, because when you think about it, we can't really go back and change what we did in the past, and the future isn't here yet.  Our only moment to take action is NOW.

Still, the things I have to do today have a deadline, because I am planning to have company tomorrow morning.  I've known this for a long time, and I always mean to get things cleaned up a little at a time in the days before the guests arrive, but that never seems to happen.  Now I have it all to do today, plus I have promised to keep up with this blog and I have promised to take care of my parents' cat while they are away for the weekend.  I knew I might encounter a time crunch today, but I still didn't order my past NOW moments to accommodate that.

So it appears that living in the NOW also means staying aware of the future enough to take action in the moment that will shape the situations that occur later.  On a larger scale than just preparing for guests to arrive, how can I order my life NOW in such a way that I have the most options open in the future, so that I can be more prepared for whatever happens?

I guess the answer boils down to discipline – having the discipline to get something done NOW instead of putting it off for later.  With that in mind, then, as soon as I get this blog published, I will get things put away in my living room and kitchen, sweep and mop the floors, clean the bathroom, get my bedsheets washed, go feed my Mom's kitty, and do my part to prepare for the spiritual study class that my guests and I will take part in tomorrow morning.  Cleaning is not among my favorite things to do, but for today I will adopt the Philosophy of Pooh, and call today my favorite day.   :-)
